Rhode Island is a state in the Northeastern region of the United States of America. Providence is the capital of this state. Rhode Island has the smallest area and it has the second highest population density. It is also the eighth least populous and the longest state in the American union. It has Connecticut to its west, the Atlantic Ocean to its south and Massachusetts to its north and east.

Geographically, the state has two natural regions – the eastern Rhode Island lowlands and the western Rhode Island uplands. The Northeastern coastal forests ecoregion is a part of the forests of the state. The state’s highest natural point is Jerimoth Hill which is 247m above sea level, the rest of the state is mostly flat land.

Ocean State is the nickname given to Rhode Island because of a large number of oceanfront beaches that it comprises. The Narragansett Bay is a major topographical feature of the state, with about 30 islands within the bay. It attracts visitors due to its legacy as a colony.
